A Study on Cutaneous Expression of Hepatitis B Virus DNA related to the States of Serum Hepatitis B Virus Markers By Polymerase Chain Reaction

Abstract
The incidence of Hepatitis B in Korea is high that many public health problems are emerging. Recently HBV has been found in liver tissue as well as other orgns including skin tissue.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the affinity of Hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA to the skin according to the states of serum HBV markers by polymerase chain reaction(PCR).
To clarify the possibility of the existence of HBV in skin, we used 23 paraffin-embedded skin specimens of patients with various dermatoses with serum HBV markers examined by EIA previously and 3 liver specimens of patients with chronic active
hepatitis
with HBs antigenemia.
HBV DNA was detected in all liver specimens of 3 chronic active hepatitis with HBs antigenemia. Of11 skin specimens from patients with HBs antigenemia, 9 skin specimens(81.8%) had HBV DNA. Of 9 skin specimens from patients who had negative HBs Ag
and
positive either anti HBs or anti HBc, 8 skin specimens(88.9%) showed HBV DNA by PCR.
Even though the liver is the main organ of HBV, our data show that HBV may have high affinity to skin and may take part in the pathogenesis of various dermatoses. Also the further more studies for detection of HBV DNA in the skin, serum, liver
tissue
using PCR are required for evaluation of the exact prevalence of HBV, the extent of it's affinity to various tissues including skin.
